The Ewaso Ng’iro North Integrated Sustainable Livelihoods Transformation Programme is an ambitious initiative proposed by the Ewaso Ng’iro North River Basin Development Authority (ENNDA) in Kenya. The goal of the 6-year, Kshs. 18.72 billion programme is to improve the livelihoods of over 4.5 million people living in the Ewaso Ng’iro North River Basin.
Key points about the programme
It focuses on the arid and semi-arid lands (ASALs) in northern Kenya which face challenges like frequent droughts, floods, land degradation, food insecurity and poverty. 92% of the ENNDA basin area is classified as ASAL.
The programme adopts a sustainable livelihoods development approach to provide long-term solutions. It aims to build resilience against climate change and promote socio-economic development.
It has three main components:
- Climate Change Mitigation – water infrastructure development, renewable energy, catchment conservation, climate-smart agriculture
- Sustainable Pastoralism Development – improving livestock management, fodder production, rangeland rehabilitation
- Value Addition – establishing milk, meat and dates processing facilities
Expected outcomes include improved incomes and well-being, reduced vulnerability, better food security, sustainable natural resource use, and more employment opportunities.
Implementation will involve partnership between ENNDA, national and county governments, local communities, development partners and the private sector.
If successful, the programme can significantly transform lives and livelihoods in this marginalized region while promoting Kenya’s national development goals and contributing to multiple Sustainable Development Goals. However, realizing this ambitious vision will require substantial resources, capacity and long-term commitment from all stakeholders involved.
